The Xbox 360 video game system presents error codes that indicate a problem with a specific part of the system within the console. Error 74 relates to the video-scaling chip that is responsible for accommodating various video resolutions, based on the type and model of television that the Xbox 360 is attached to.

   2. Turn off the console.
   3. Reattach the cable to the Xbox 360 and to the TV.
   4. Turn the console back on. If you get the same error message, proceed to Section 2 for information on how to contact Microsoft for a repair.

 Scalar Chip Problem

   1. Contact Microsoft by calling 1-800-4MY-XBOX (1-800-469-9269). Have your warranty information handy. Tell the representative that your Xbox 360 is reporting a E74 error. The representative may walk you through additional troubleshooting steps. If the problem persists, he will tell you what you need to do to ship your Xbox 360 for repair.
